Description

Toolcheck.ie is the brainchild of a Wicklow carpenter who has been the victim of tool theft in the past. He had a very simple but powerful idea for how best to combat this. The site is aimed at tradespeople who own valuable tools that are at risk of being stolen.

The central concept behind ToolCheck is to build up a comprehensive database of tools that people in the second hand market can query before purchasing. For example, let’s say Joe Soap is a carpenter and has a toolbox full of valuable tools – he can register on the site, sign up to a monthly subscription plan and then create his online toolbox by uploading serial numbers and images of his tools. Let’s say Joe’s tools are stolen after this point.

Meanwhile John Doe is in the market for a second hand drill and comes across a bargain at a local market. He can query the ToolCheck database (for free) before he buys and if the tool is found on the database – this will raise a flag. In our example, if John finds a match on Joe’s tool – Joe will be alerted and if John chooses to – he can initiate an email conversation with him. Police can also use the database to identify suspicious tools.

ToolCheck.ie Goes Live

Today we’re delighted to launch a brand new platform to help prevent tool theft in Ireland & the UK. Toolcheck.ie is the brainchild of a Wicklow based carpenter who himself was the victim of tool theft years ago and had the idea to help combat this problem.

This is a bespoke web application that we designed and built from the ground up on behalf of the client and is a classic example of how our skills can bring your ideas to life.

Case Study – Medoo.ie

Technologies Used

  • PHP
  • MySQL
  • WordPress
  • WooCommerce
  • CSS3
  • Javascript
  • jQuery
  • AJAX
  • PayPal
  • SSL

Description

Medoo.ie is the Irish flavour of a Hungarian fashion franchise owned by a Wicklow couple. They approached us in Q1 2020 with their ideas and asked if we could help them realise their dream. Of course this is exactly the kind of project that excites too so from day 1 we were a match made for each other.

In 2019, online sales figures in Ireland hit €2.2 billion. This is more that double the €1.05 billion figure from 2010. Furthermore current predictions are for that figure to hit almost €4 billion by 2024 so it’s fair to say that online sales are trending up. Fashion is the biggest online shopping segment in Ireland accounting for 29% of all online sales and this is the healthy market that Medoo Ireland want to enter.

Buzzword Bingo

One of the most important tasks in my job is to speak to clients in a language that they can understand. We techie nerds need to understand the lingo of how a website runs, we don’t need to overload our clients with too much unnecessary jargon. I thought I’d write a blog to explain some of the buzz words you may hear from web designers.

Hosting

For a website to be visible on the internet, it must be hosted on a web server. Think of hosting as the process of housing your website on the internet. We have accounts with some of the top hosting companies in Ireland and will look after the hosting for you.

Server

A server can mean 2 things in relation to the web

  • A server is the computer on the internet that hosts your website (Windows, Linux etc.)
  • A server is the software that runs on a computer that processes requests and responses to your website. Think of it as a container for your website.

Why go bespoke?

WordPress is a very powerful platform for creating and managing websites. When clients come to us looking for help in setting up a website, for 90% of cases WordPress fits the bill (business website with contact forms, blog, online shop etc.). The remainder are in scope for a bespoke solution – their requirements can’t be satisfied with an off the shelf solution like WordPress.

Most web designers can’t facilitate this group as they don’t have the web development skills. See our article here on the differences between web designers and developers. We are both designers and developers which means that we can create something beautiful but has bespoke functionality around your requirements.

What is the difference between web design and web development?

From time to time you may see the terms web design and web development intermingled and while they may be related, they are very different concepts.

Web design is the process of laying out web pages. Where to put the text, the images, the logo, the buttons – which fonts to use etc. A good web designer will have the skills to make the page attractive, intuitive and provide an overall good user experience.

Case Study – Glamourize.ie

Technologies Used

  • PHP
  • MySQL
  • OpenCart
  • CSS3
  • Javascript
  • jQuery
  • AJAX
  • PayPal
  • SSL

Description

Glamourize.ie is the brainchild of couple based in north Wexford who wanted to take their existing online presence to the next level. They specialise in ladies accessories and had been in business for a number of years with a well known online store platform. They felt the need to upgrade their existing store to look more visually appealing with a stronger brand – this is where they felt their existing solution was not strong enough.

If somebody is going to make an online purchase on your site – they need to have confidence. They need to trust your brand, your products and first impressions are so important. Off the shelf solutions E-Commerce are great for cost savings and speed to market. They are often very easy to set up, you don’t need a web developer, you don’t need seperate hosting and you don’t even need a domain name. However there are huge limitations with these systems – mainly around design and customer experience. One shop tends to look the same as all others and it’s hard to stand out from the crowd or put your own personal touch on the site to re-inforce your brand values.
